I’ve got some exciting news!! I have convinced my teacher that rather than doing the prescribed assignments, I am going to do them in my own sort of way. After all, I am graduated, and I don’t need the credits, so this is just bonus school-- I am here for the food, the experiences, and the learning (minus the homework ;)
I decided that some of the things I am learning and the discussions we are having are worth sharing. So, in addition to sharing our favorite restaurants and food adventures while we are here, I am going to be talking/blogging about the interesting things I am learning. No need to fear, it is all food related and interesting!
As I have been doing the class readings and visiting these amazing historical sights, I have been pondering a series of questions.
Why do we eat what we eat?
Where do the foods we eat come from?
What role does food play in social hierarchy?
How does international trade effect our dietary makeup?
Are you bored yet?!
Although these may be a bit more philosophical than my casual Instagram food reviews, I think they have a place as part of Savor- after all we want to talk all things food, even the history of it! For the next few weeks, I hope to breakdown some of these questions (and others as they arise) into easy-to-digest information with the hope that you will leave thinking about your world of food. I think this could be both enlightening and inspiring!
I will begin to address these questions in future blog posts, but for today I will leave you with this thought from one of our readings.
“What people eat expresses who and what they are, to themselves and to others.” (Mintz)
What we eat is uniquely intertwined with our identity. Waaaay beyond our looks, what we eat gives insight into our family history, our traditions, our wealth, our likes and dislikes and so much more.
We are what we eat, or is it that who we are determines what we eat?
